Trois configurations du « voyage dans la causalité » dans la science-fiction française (1 ère moitié du XX ème siècle)

International audienceWe know time travel and space as an inexhaustible source of variation in science fiction novels. This is the case, for example, of the staging of the temporal paradoxes inaugurated by Barjavel in The Unwary Traveller (1943), but also of the extension of the dimensions of our world to the fourth dimension, of the exploration of galactic spaces, of travel in the infinitely large as in the infinitely small. J. Spitz proposes through the plot of The Eye of Purgatory published in 1945 to inaugurate a "third category": "Yes! Why don't we go about going into causality? ». And to continue wryly: "You travel in causality? Well, you'll send me postcards... ». The chosen corpus covers three areas of causality alien to the usual causality of our world: those of the biological laws of aging, the physical laws of gravity, the laws of unfailing technological progress in human societies. But the process of our world being transgressed does not mean at all that it replaces the disruption of fantastic worlds that would be beyond rational control. More than the absence of any causal rule, the works studied will describe various modes of causality which, in order to be unnatural, will nevertheless introduce a new order of phenomena and a coherent world configuration. In Spitz's novel, the time of biological causality is accelerated, a new world, concealed by the usual causality of the world, is discovered. In Mr. Renard's The Blue Peril, terrifying and seemingly fantastic situations (beings disappear into the sky as they fly away) are resolved by a very simple explanation: a physical causality as yet unknown reverses the causality of the phenomena of our earthly world. In R. Barjavel's Ravage , the causality of technological progress paradoxically creates the conditions for its own collapse and reversal against man.Accelerated causality, reverse causality, explosive causality will thus be three modalities of the journey that we propose to compare in the three registers of biology, physics and technique. Through these journeys, it is the revenge of the man freed from the chains of inexorable causality that is welcomed. What Spitz states in The Eye of Purgatory: The Journey into Causity "... no longer has anything predetermined, bathed that we are in a universal free will, far from any causal universe ... ».On connait les voyages dans le temps et l'espace comme une source inépuisable de variations dans les romans de science-fiction. C'est le cas par exemple de la mise en scène des paradoxes temporels inaugurés par Barjavel dans Le voyageur imprudent (1943), mais aussi de l'extension des dimensions de notre monde à la quatrième dimension, de l'exploration des espaces galactiques, des voyages dans l'infiniment grand comme dans l'infiniment petit. J. Spitz propose à travers l'intrigue de L'oeil du purgatoire publié en 1945 1 d'inaugurer une « troisième catégorie » : « Mais oui !Pourquoi ne ferait-on pas des voyages dans la causalité ? 2 ». Et de continuer ironiquement : « Tu voyages dans la causalité ? Eh bien, tu m'enverras des cartes postales… 3 ». Le corpus choisi couvre trois domaines de la causalité étrangère à la causalité habituelle de notre monde : ceux des lois biologiques du vieillissement, des lois physiques de la gravité, des lois d'un progrès technologique sans faille dans les sociétés humaines. Mais que la causalité de notre monde soit transgressée ne signifie pas du tout que s'y substitue le dérèglement de mondes fantastiques qui seraient hors de tout contrôle rationnel. Plus que l'absence de toute règle causale, les oeuvres étudiées viendront décrire divers modes de causalité qui pour être contre-nature, n'en introduiront pas moins un nouvel ordre de phénomènes et une configuration de monde cohérente. Dans le roman de Spitz, le temps de la causalité biologique est accéléré, un monde nouveau, dissimulé par la causalité habituelle du monde, se découvre. Dans Le péril bleu de M. Renard 4 , des situations terrifiantes et en apparence fantastiques (des êtres disparaissent dans le ciel en s'envolant) vont se résoudre par une explication fort simple : une causalité physique encore inconnue vient inverser la causalité des phénomènes de notre monde terrestre.
