[Departement_IRSTEA]GT [TR1_IRSTEA]32 - GECOTER / GENIALPThis is a document of transfer of knowledge following a research on the spatial organization of the vegetation in the mountain pastures in the French Northern Alps, linked to the changes of the pastoral practices. In a first stage, this work led to establish a map of the various vegetation of the mountain pastures for the whole study area. This map is based on the development of a physiognomical model to describe the main types of the vegetation, using analysis and interpretation of remotely sensed data. In a second phase, the relations between (i) the spatial distribution of the vegetation (ii) the ecological characteristics and (iii) the pastoral practices involved, were analysed, in order to appreciate the consequences of the practices changes. This guide is composed of three parts: Agro-ecological characterization of the vegetation of the mountain pastures of the French Northern Alps. This is the base of the physiognomical typology. Setting up of the physiognomical map of the vegetation : methods and results. Principles and technical choices are indicated concerning the interpretation of the satellite images. Then one describes the characteristics of the 20 physiognomical types obtained (10 of which concerning swards and moors). Then one proposes a 6-types typology of circa 1000 mountain pastoral units, based on the description of the vegetation, on the ecological characteristics and on the pastoral practices. Various possible uses of the physiognomical maps are described, particularly focusing on the main applications for the technicians which are involved in pastoral field management (technicians from agricultural and environment spheres) : Standard pastoral diagnosis, detailed pastoral diagnosis. Ecological applications : knowledge and management of the natural altitude environments. Territorial development procedures.C'est un document de transfert des connaissances qui fait suite à une recherche sur l'organisation spatiale de la végétation des alpages des Alpes du Nord, selon l'évolution des pratiques pastorales. Cette action a abouti dans une première phase, à l'établissement d'une cartographie des couverts végétaux de tous les alpages de l'ensemble de la zone d'étude, grâce à l'élaboration d'un modèle de nature physionomique de reconnaissance spatiale des types de végétation, à partir de travaux d'interprétation de données satellitales. Dans une seconde phase, les relations entre la répartition spatiale de la végétation, les caractéristiques de milieu et les pratiques pastorales mises en ouvre ont été analysées, afin d'apprécier les conséquences de l'évolution des pratiques. Ce guide est composé de trois parties : 1/ Caractérisation agro-écologique des végétations des alpages des Alpes françaises du Nord, base de la typologie physionomique de ces végétations (Alpes Externes et Internes). 2/ Description de la cartographie physionomique de la végétation. Les grands principes de son élaboration à partir de l'interprétation des images des satellites sont exposés. Ensuite on décrit les caractéristiques des 20 types physionomiques obtenus (dont une dizaine pour les pelouses et landes). Puis l'on propose une typologie des alpages des Alpes du Nord, basée sur cette description de la végétation, sur les caractéristiques de milieu et sur les pratiques pastorales. 3/ Les différentes utilisations possibles de la cartographie physionomique, avec notamment les applications majeures pour les différents techniciens, de la sphère agricole ou de l'environnement, qui interviennent sur le domaine pastoral : Les diagnostics pastoraux standard et approfondis, Les applications écologiques.
