Aux origines de l’humanité : retracer les grandes étapes de notre évolution biologique et culturelle à partir de l’étude du cerveau de nos ancêtres

International audienceWho were the hominins associated to the oldest tools that were found in East Africa? If the lithic artefacts could be mute on these aspects of our history, the field of (paleo)neurology may contribute to the ongoing debates on the identity of the first toolmakers and the assessment of their cognitive capacities. In this paper, we provide a brief synthesis of what we know about the cerebral condition of Australopithecus, Paranthropus and early Homo, which are the potential earliest tool makers. We also demonstrate how, from the study of fossil remains of our ancestors and the use of imaging and 3D modelling techniques, we can reconstruct the evolutionary history of the brain of our ancestors and their behaviours. In particular, we insist on the interest of developing a multidisciplinary approach combining experiments (e.g., replicating the processes involved in toolmaking), imaging (e.g., functional MRIs, microtomography), paleoanthropology (e.g., identifying fossil remains) and statistics (e.g., shape analyses) for addressing these questions.Qui sont les auteurs des premiers outils retrouvés en Afrique de l’Est ? Si les vestiges lithiques restent muets sur ces questions, la neuropaléontologie participe activement aux débats sur l’identité des artisans des plus vieux outils et sur la reconstitution de leurs capacités cognitives. Dans cet article, nous proposons une brève synthèse de nos connaissances actuelles sur la condition cérébrale chez Australopithecus, Paranthropus, et les premiers représentants du genre Homo, qui constituent les principaux candidats au titre de premiers artisans de l’humanité. Nous démontrons également comment, à partir de l’étude des vestiges fossiles de nos ancêtres et de l’utilisation des techniques d’imagerie et de modélisation 3D, nous pouvons reconstituer l’histoire évolutive du cerveau de nos ancêtres et leurs comportements. En particulier, nous insistons sur l’intérêt de développer une approche pluridisciplinaire combinant expérimentation (e.g., reproduire les gestes impliqués dans la fabrication d’outils), imagerie (e.g., IRM fonctionnelle, microtomographie), paléoanthropologie (e.g., identification des restes fossiles) et statistiques (e.g., analyses de formes) pour résoudre ces grandes énigmes archéologiques
