Armenian catholics, from emancipation to schism : an upset identity at the time of the awakening of nationalities (1809-1888)

Peut-on être à la fois Arménien, membre d’un Millet ottoman et catholique ? cette question est sous-jacente aux multiples conflits qui ont émaillé l’histoire de cette communauté au cours du XIXe siècle. L’émancipation des Arméniens catholiques de la tutelle des Arméniens Apostoliques a donné lieu à un dédoublement de juridiction, avec la création d’un « Katolik Milleti » et d’un archevêché primatial rattaché directement à Rome et indépendant du Patriarcat Arménien catholique de Cilicie. Les Arméniens catholiques de l’empire ottoman, soucieux de réunion avec les Arméniens apostoliques, se sont partagés entre partisans de l’alignement sur la discipline latine et partisans du maintien des usages de l’Eglise Arménienne et d’une autonomie relative de leur institution patriarcale. Ces divisions ont connu deux moments de tensions extrêmes, entre 1847 et 1853, autour de la condamnation de la société Hamazkeyats (La Nation Unanime), symptomatique du Réveil culturel arménien initié par les mekhitaristes de Venise, et entre 1867 et 1888, avec la formation d’un schisme et d’une Eglise Arménienne catholique orientale à laquelle l’Ordre des moines antonins arméniens a largement contribué. Les deux séries de conflits sont marqués par la personnalité et le rôle controversé de Mgr Antoine Hassoun, archevêque-primat de Constantinople puis Patriarche des Arméniens catholiques, et par l’intervention de notables laïcs influents. Ce travail rend compte de l’étroite connexion entre ces évènements et ceux qui secouent l’Eglise romaine en Europe au temps du Printemps des Peuples, dans ses rapports avec les Puissances catholiques, avec le catholicisme libéral, et avec différents courants gallicans, et qui ont contribué au développement du catholicisme intransigeant. Les ambiguïtés et les limites des Réformes entreprises par l’empire ottoman sont mises en relief au cours de la révolte de Zeytoun de 1862, qui témoigne des résistances à la disparition d’un ordre local ancien, du rôle des missions franciscaines et des espoirs d’intervention de la France en vue d’un statut d’autonomie analogue a celui qui venait d’être accordé au Liban. Par la lettre apostolique Reversurus, Pie IX tente d’imposer une modification majeure de la discipline de l’Eglise Arménienne catholique en vue de l’aligner sur la discipline latine. La résistance à cette décision est à l’origine du schisme, qui se manifeste pendant le concile Vatican I, alors qu’une alliance se noue entre les évêques arméniens proches des dissidents et les évêques de la minorité hostile à l’infaillibilité. Le caractère spécifique du régime des Millets dans l’empire ottoman provoque l’hostilité de la Porte au Reversurus, accusé de porter atteinte aux droits du Sultan. Cette hostilité combinée à une forte opposition d’une partie de la communauté au patriarche Hassoun, provoque un long schisme interne. A la jonction des trois puissants leviers qui travaillent la communauté, le levier ethno-culturel, le levier politique interne et externe à l’empire ottoman, et le levier religieux, une reconstruction difficile de l’identité des Arméniens catholiques va se mettre en place au terme d'un long schisme, en attendant que les évolutions de l’ecclésiologie produites à partir de Vatican II ne viennent confirmer les intuitions des Arméniens attachés au maintien de la discipline de leur Eglise.Can one be both Armenian, member of an Ottoman Millet and Catholic? this question is underlying the multiple conflicts that have marked the history of this community during the 19th century. The emancipation of Armenian Catholics in Constantinople from Apostolic armenians guardianship gave rise to a duplication of jurisdiction, with the creation of a "Katolik Milleti" and a primatial archbishopric attached directly to Rome and independent of the Armenian Catholic Patriarchate of Cilicia. The Catholic Armenians of the Ottoman Empire, anxious to reunite with the apostolic Armenians, were divided between supporters of alignment with Latin discipline and supporters of maintaining the uses of the Armenian Church and a relative autonomy of their patriarchal institution. These divisions experienced two moments of extreme tension, between 1847 and 1853, around the condemnation of the Hamazkeyats society (The Unanimous Nation), symptomatic of the Armenian cultural awakening initiated by the Mkhitarists of Venice, and between 1867 and 1888, with the formation of a schism and an Eastern Catholic Armenian Church to which the Order of Antonine Armenian Monks has made a significant contribution. Both series of conflicts are marked by the personality and the controversial role of Mgr Antoine Hassoun, Archbishop-Primate of Constantinople and then Patriarch of Armenian Catholics, and by the intervention of influential lay notables. This work reflects the close connection between these events and those which shake the Roman Church in Europe at the time of the Spring of the Peoples, in its relations with the Catholic Powers, with liberal Catholicism, and with various Gallican currents, and which contributed to the development of uncompromising Catholicism. The ambiguities and the limits of the Reforms undertaken by the Ottoman Empire are highlighted during the Zeytoun revolt of 1862, which testifies to the resistance to the disappearance of an old local order, to the role of Franciscan missions and to hopes for French intervention, with a view to a statute of autonomy similar to that which had just been granted to Lebanon. With the apostolic letter Reversurus, Pius IX attempts to impose a major modification of the discipline of the Armenian Catholic Church in order to bring it in line with Latin discipline. Resistance to this decision is at the origin of the schism, which manifests itself during Vatican Council I, when an alliance is formed between the Armenian bishops close to the dissidents and the bishops of the minority hostile to infallibility. The specific character of the Millets regime in the Ottoman Empire provoked the Porte's hostility to Reversurus, accused of infringing the rights of the Sultan. This hostility, combined with a strong opposition of a fraction of the community to patriarch Hassoun, induced a long internal schism. At the junction of the three powerful levers that work the community, the ethno-cultural lever, the political lever internal and external to the Ottoman Empire, and the religious lever, a difficult reconstruction of the identity of Armenian Catholics will take place, long before the evolutions of ecclesiology produced from Vatican II confirm the intuitions of the Armenians attached to the maintenance of the discipline of their Church
