Les noyaux actifs de galaxie (AGN pour Active Galactic Nuclei en anglais) ont été découverts il y a maintenant plus de 50 ans mais restent entourés de mystère. Bien que nous soyons sûrs qu’ils tirent leur énergie d’un trou noir supermassif entouré d’un disque d’accrétion et qu’ils disposent parfois d’un jet relativiste, les liens entre le trou noir, le disk et le jet, de même que les mécanismes d’accélération et d’émission, restent flous. Les modèles leptoniques et hadroniques arrivent tout deux à expliquer la distribution spectrale en énergie (SED pour Spectral Energy Distribution en anglais) des blazars à haute énergie (dans le domaine du GeV-TeV), donnant une dégénérescence.
