Метод комунікативних завдань як інструмент особистісно орієнтованого навчання

The study under consideration analyses scientific experience of applying the method of task-based learning in the process of teaching English as the second language to university students. This method is seen as an effective tool in developing interpersonal competences of students, which is one of the main requirement of modern education aimed at increasing employability of graduates. The essence of the task-based learning has been identified as conscious learning through using the language to perform a communicative task in the situation similar to a real-life one. The article also casts light on the role of a teacher, which is to set the task, whose completion will lead to the spontaneous, personal and original experiment on the part of the student. Consequently, a student is expected to gain experience of using the foreign language. In this stage, a teacher is to raise a student’s awareness of the language used in the process of the experiment. The article analyses the definitions of the term ‘communicative task’ offered by researchers, as well as focuses on the criteria and characteristics which allow distinguishing a communicative task from an average classroom activity. Thus, a communicative task is to generate students’ interest, to focus on the meaning, to have an ultimate goal, to be assessed in terms of its completion, to be connected with real-life activities. Communicative tasks are also characterized by the focus on communication, introduction of authentic texts, time constraints. The three main stages in communicative task creation have been studies. These include pre-task, task and language focus. The article also dwells on the benefits and potential risks of applying this method. On the plus side, communicative tasks are effective tools of a learner-centered approach, they make the language function as an instrument, not as a goal, they allow to narrow the gap between the abstract knowledge of the language and its practical application, they promote communicative approach, the acquisition of all four basic skills, and cater for individual needs of students. Nevertheless, potential problems should also be taken into consideration, namely, inappropriateness of this method for students majoring in linguistics, the necessity to deal with the negative attitude of students who adhere to the ‘traditional’ teacher centered approach to learning, certain doubts connected with the application of this method for levels lower than intermediate.Обобщён опыт учёных по использованию метода коммуникативных задач для студентов высшей школы, изучающих английский язык как второй иностранный. Проанализированы особенности обучения с использованием метода коммуникативных задач, выделены его цели и преимущества. Были систематизированы критерии и характеристики коммуникативной задачи, определена его структура, а также роль преподавателя при использовании этого метода. Сделан вывод о целесообразности использования данного метода с целью повышения наряду со специальными (профессиональными), ключевых межличностных и системных компетенций студентов.Узагальнено досвід науковців щодо використання методу комунікативних завдань для студентів вищої школи, які вивчають англійську мову як другу іноземну. Проаналізовано особливості навчання з використанням методу комунікативних завдань, виокремлено його цілі та переваги. Було систематизовано критерії та характеристики комунікативного завдання, визначено його структуру, а також роль викладача при використанні цього методу. Зроблено висновок про доцільність використання даного методу з метою підвищення поряд зі спеціальними (фаховими), ключових міжособистісних та системних компетенцій студентів
