Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive treatment modality that utilises a photoactive drug and visible light to induce cytotoxicity and cell death. PDT is in clinical use for the treatment of several cancers. However, its implementation as a universal option for cancer treatment is obstructed by two key limitations: Poor tissue-penetration of light and the inability to treat occult metastases. Several studies attempt to overcome the issue of tissue-penetration by employing bioluminescence (BL); however, a solution for treatment of metastasised cancers remains unknown.
