In the second year of the second war with England, known as the War of 1812, keels were laid for a number of fighting craft for the United States navy. Among them was that of a sloop of war which. was launched at New York, September 19, 1813, seventy-two working days after the keel was laid. Her dimensions were, length 118 feet, breadth of beam 32 feet, depth of hold 14 feet. The sloop had 26 gun-ports, was of 509 tons, and was classed next below a frigate. She was christened Peacock
