This research in teaching and learning of French as a foreign language investigates the obstacles a group of international students has to cope with in the conducting and writing of their doctoral thesis in linguistics. While French universities face an overwhelming increase in the number of students and a growing internationalization, more than 40% of doctoral students are international, most of whom are non-native speakers.Meeting the expectations of a doctoral research is a significant undertaking to home students and even more so for international ones.
