During the first half of the twentieth century the former territory of Manchuria in Northeast China became one of the greatest settlement areas of the world and the most important foreign destination for the Japanese. This article discusses the impacts of colonialism and its associated migration, especially with regard to the multiethnic society created in Mukden (Shenyang). The focus is on the residential segregation of the Japanese population in the South Manchuria Railway Zone (1920-36) and in the Greater Mukden (1935-42).
