El sector agroindustrial del algodón en España: cultivo, desmotación y Estado (1920-1970)

This paper considers the Spanish cotton-gin industry within Spanish economic policy, especially Francoist economic policy, closely connected with cotton growing. Protectionist cotton trade policies and institutional frameworks relating to cotton and cotton-gin determinated firms’ strategies and behaviour. The aim of this article is to offer an analysis of the organisation and evolution of the Spanish cotton-gin industry from its early first years until the end of the 1970’s and the specific conditions of the institutional framework within which this development took place. In this paper we study three subjects: first, we consider cotton policies and show how the evolution of cotton growing was conditioned by cotton-gin industry development; second, we indicate the structure of the cotton-gin industry and calculate its profits during the first Francoist period in the specific circumstances that operated within the cotton market; and, finally, we analyse how the first Francoist institutional framework was dismantled and outline the development of Spanish cottongin industry from that time until the crisis of the 1970’s.En el artículo se estudia la industria desmotadora inserta en la política económica española, en especial la del franquismo, y estrechamente relacionada con el cultivo del algodón. Los tres aspectos (industria desmotadora, algodón y Estado) son indisociables porque las políticas comerciales proteccionistas del algodón y el marco institucional construido para la difusión del algodón y de su agroindustria determinan las estrategias y el comportamiento empresarial. El estudio aborda cómo se organizó y evolucionó la industria desmotadora en España desde sus orígenes hasta finales de los años setenta de este siglo y las condiciones particulares del marco institucional en el que se desenvolvió. Los temas tratados son: las políticas algodoneras y la evolución del cultivo como condicionante del desarrollo de la industria; la estructura del sector desmotador y el cálculo de los beneficios por éste acumulados durante el primer franquismo y en las especiales circunstancias en las que se desenvolvió el mercado; cómo se desmontó el peculiar marco institucional del primer franquismo y cómo se comportó el sector desde entonces y hasta el inicio de la crisis en los años setenta
