Turismo y economía en la Málaga del siglo XX

The aim of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the historic evolution of tourism in Málaga in the XX century. We analyse the tourism demand as well as the thourism supply through their main indicators. We analyse the tourism that for the period 1950-1975 the growth rates of the tourist sector were astonishing. Also, in the last quarter of the XX century, except for some interruptions in the periods 1876-1980 and 1989-1993, the tourist sector in Málaga achieved high although moderate growth rates. Finally, we analyse the pressure of the tourism industry on (i) demography, in terms of demographic growth and its spatial distribution, and (ii) the productive structure in Málaga.El objetivo del presente trabajo es contribuir a un mejor conocimiento de la evolución histórica del fenómeno turístico en la provincia de Málaga a lo largo del siglo XX. Para ello, se estudian los principales indicadores turísticos de demanda y de oferta y se demuestra que entre 1950 y 1975 el crecimiento fue verdaderamente espectacular y que durante el último cuarto de siglo, y a excepción de dos momentos especialmente complicados, los comprendidos entre 1976 y 1980 y entre 1989 y 1993, el turismo prosiguió su expansión en la provincia malagueña, aunque, eso sí, con unas tasas de crecimiento algo menores. Asimismo, también se analizan las posibles repercusiones de la expansión turística sobre la demografía malagueña, tanto en términos de crecimiento poblacional como de distribución espacial, y sobre la estructura productiva provincial
