Post-socialist cities are often characterised by large suburban, densely developed areas for manufacturing industry on the periphery, hardly maintained traditionally important inner city areas, and a deteriorating ring of housing between them. Implementing sustainable development and participatory planning practices in the redevelopment of these areas has become a challenge for planners in the former command economies.
