Aquatic macroinvertebrates harbor a broad spectrum of gut endosymbionts, among them trichomycetes species (including fungi and protozoan), which have been traditionally studied by mycologists. The protozoan Paramoebidium avitruviense lives in association with the nymphal stages of Siphonoperla torrentium (Chloroperlidae, Plecoptera). Important quantities of P. avitruviense thalli were obtained during a long-term study performed in Vallforners stream (Montseny Natural Park, Barcelona, Spain), allowing a revision and emendation of the species, particularly regarding the morphology of the cysts, which were previously misidentified.
