‘Un fait urbain’ in Haarlem

Project for the station of the 21st century within an urban expansion that builds on the tradition of the West European city Scope ‘Using an architectonic intervention, create a vision for the Haarlem railway zone based on the assumption that the need will arise to place the railway underground’ is how the project read that we were given. It is a very broad project, which surely does not only contain architectonic aspects. Where to start? We discovered that moving the station to the East side of the city would make for a nice project. But how should we give it form here with any sense of reality? Nowadays, a station is just a roof and some stairs financed in order to offer the traveller shelter and make the platforms accessible. This reality is terribly banal and has nothing to do with a concept such as ‘coming home’ with the station as a ‘sign in the city’, ‘gateway to the city’, etc. A similar project does, however, offer the possibility of reviewing existing structures. In Haarlem, which has already grown many times beyond its city limits, this seems like an interesting question. The starting point of moving the current railroads created a series of viewpoints for a new urban design and related transformation projects: recovery of the characteristics of the historical city centre, the transformation of the Oostpoort area into a new core and the layout of the new infrastructure, both above ground and underground. How does one deal with such transformation processes? How does the city preserve its recognisability and still anticipate new circumstances? By using existing elements and designing a new spatial and programmatic cohesion, this project has resulted in a proposal for transforming the railway zone, from which the project designs a new station as ‘un fait urbain’ (‘an urban fact’).Opgave voor het station van de eenentwintigste eeuw binnen een stadsuitbreiding die voortbouwt op de traditie van de WestEuropese stad Kader ‘Maak door middel van een architectonische ingreep een visie voor de spoorzone Haarlem op basis van de aanname dat de noodzaak gaat ontstaan de sporen ondergronds te leggen’, luidde de opdracht die wij kregen voorgelegd. Een zeer brede opgave, die zeker niet alleen architectonische aspecten omvat. Waar te beginnen? We ontdekten dat met het verplaatsen van het station naar de oostzijde van de stad een mooie opgave zou kunnen ontstaan. Maar hoe zouden we hier vorm aan kunnen geven met enige realiteitszin? Tegenwoordig worden ten behoeve van een station slechts een dak en een trap gefinancierd om de reiziger enige beschutting te bieden en het perron toegankelijk te maken. Deze realiteit is uiterst banaal en heeft niets meer van doen met een begrip als ‘thuiskomen’ of met het station als ‘teken in de stad’, ‘poort van de stad’ enzovoort. Een dergelijke opgave biedt echter wel de mogelijkheid bestaande structuren te herzien. Juist in Haarlem, dat al vele malen tot aan en over zijn gemeentegrenzen heen is gegroeid, bleek dit een interessante vraag. De aanname om het huidige spoortracé te verleggen maakte een reeks gezichtspunten voor een nieuw stadsontwerp en bijbehorende transformatieopgaven los: herstel van de kenmerken van het oude centrum, de transformatie van het Oostpoortgebied tot een nieuwe kern en de vormgeving van de nieuwe infrastructuur, zowel boven als ondergronds. Hoe ga je om met dergelijke transformatieprocessen? Hoe behoudt de stad haar herkenbaarheid en kan er toch op nieuwe omstandigheden worden ingespeeld? Door het inzetten van bestaande elementen en het ontwerpen van een nieuwe ruimtelijke en programmatische samenhang heeft deze opgave geresulteerd in een voorstel voor transformatie van de spoorzone, waaruit de opgave voortvloeit een nieuw station te ontwerpen als ‘un fait urbain’ (‘een stedelijk f
