Methylated melamine formaldehyde resin is a kind of amino resin used as a cross-linker in the organic coating sector. Resin production takes place in the presence of catalysts sodium hydroxide and nitric acid using melamine, formaldehyde and methanol as feedstocks. The production process consists of three steps: methylolation, etherification and distillation. Due to its carcinogenic nature, the free amount of formaldehyde in the final product MMF should be less than 0.5% by mass.
