Meiotic recombination can be affected by factors that reside either within (i.e., cis-acting elements) or outside (i.e., trans -acting modifiers) the recombining interval. To assess how trans-acting genetic modifiers polymorphic within maize germplasm affect rates and patterns of meiotic recombination in the absence of polymorphic cis factors, meiotic recombination was characterized across a sequence-identical 140-kb multi-genic a1-sh2 interval in each of three genetic backgrounds in maize.
