Knowledge, power, and the city: The negotiation of the city and the production of knowledge in real-world laboratories

Reallabore gewinnen in der Forschung stetig an Aufmerksamkeit und werden als ein vielversprechendes Instrumentarium betrachtet, das im Sinne eines transdisziplinären Ansatzes gemeinsam mit Akteur_innen aus Zivilgesellschaft, Politik, Verwaltung und Wirtschaft ‚realweltliche‘ Herausforderungen in Städten verstehen und lösen will. Allerdings stellt die Erforschung von sozialen Prozessen in Reallaboren noch Neuland dar, auf dem noch viele offene Fragen besonders hinsichtlich der gemeinsamen Wissensproduktion auszuhandeln sind. Am Beispiel eines konkreten Forschungsprojektes zur kooperativen Freiraumentwicklung in Ankunftsquartieren fragen wir für die kritische Stadtforschung, mit welchen theoretischen Vorannahmen, in welchen Machtkonstellationen und mit welchen Zielsetzungen Wissen in Reallaboren produziert wird. Diese Fragen diskutieren wir anhand der Debatten um eine kritische Wissensproduktion und die Gerechte Stadt. Der Artikel zeigt auf, dass Reallabore zwar stark in bestimmten förderpolitischen Strukturen verhaftet sind und damit die Gefahr der politischen Vereinnahmung besteht, sich aber dennoch Chancen eröffnen, mit ihnen zu einer kritischen Wissensproduktion und einer gerechten Stadtentwicklung beizutragen.Real-world labs increasingly gain attention in research and are regarded as a promising instrument that aims to understand and solve ‚real-world problems‘ in cities together with actors from civil society, politics, administration and the economy. However, as research on social processes in real-world labs is still relatively new, it raises various questions with regard to the joint production of knowledge. Taking a lab research project on cooperative open space development in arrival neighbourhoods as its example, this article therefore discusses the theoretical assumptions, the power constellations and the objectives of joint knowledge production in real-world labs. Debates on critical knowledge production and the Just City serve as theoretical extensions. The article shows that although real-world labs are strongly rooted in funding objectives and thus run the risk of being politically appropriated, they nevertheless open up opportunities to contribute to a critical production of knowledge about cities and to foster their just development
