This study was an attempt to determine whether fashion, the clothing industry, or the retail trade played a role in bringing women into the profession of prostitution in St. Louis. This study also examined the common beliefs of the period including the conviction that young women fell from grace if they had an excessive love of dress. The people of the Gilded Age were concerned about whether their young women behaved and appeared appropriate while maintaining their virtue, despite the temptations of fashionable society.
