The thesis focuses on 5 studies examining the role of adult attachment in volunteering by defining volunteerism as a form of caregiving. By that we suggest an effect of one behavioral system, attachment, on another, caring or prosocial behaviors in individual or group settings. Studies 1 and 2 examined the links between adult romantic attachment, volunteer behavior, and volunteer motivations. Attachment avoidance was associated with less volunteering and with lowered altruistic and exploration volunteer motives, whereas attachment anxiety was associated with self-enhancing volunteer motives.
