Multiprotein chromatin remodelling complexes show remarkable conservation of function amongst metazoans, even though components present in invertebrates are often found as multiple paralogous proteins in vertebrate complexes. In some cases, these paralogues specify distinct biochemical and/or functional activities in vertebrate cells.
