The post-World War II period and 40 years in the Soviet sphere of interest captured Hungary from a centuries-old system of economic cooperation in Central Europe. This system was operated primarily between Hungarian agriculture and the region of Western Europe, mainly German territories, with industrial traditions. Previously established trade relations between Western and Central and Eastern European countries were reduced to a minimum in the 1950s, so the technology gap became gradual. The re-established co-operation from the early 1970s was mainly limited to imports of shortages and starting from an extremely low volume.
