Three Essays On The Economics Of Sustainable Coffee Systems = Tres ensayos sobre la economía de sistemas de Café Sostenibles

Abstract: Coffee offers a unique possibility for sustainability as this production system integrates economic development, social inclusion, and environmental protection. The first chapter of this dissertation assesses the impact of smallholders’ participation in a novel business model called the Relationship Coffee Model (RCM). The second chapter evaluates the economics and ecology of shade-grown coffee, a production system regarded as environmentally sustainable. The third chapter considers the crucial role of cooperatives, and trust and reciprocity among its members. Overall, chapter one provides evidence of a sustainable business model connecting smallholders with high-value chains and stimulate agro-ecological practices. Chapter two shows that under the appropriate market conditions, smallholders receive the benefits from bird and forest conservation, facilitating a sustainable interaction of human and natural systems. Chapter three concludes that propensity to trust and reciprocate among members of the same cooperative is higher but only when the length of membership in the cooperative is considered. Moreover, gender inclusion and education play an important role in improving trust and reciprocity. Taking together, the three chapters suggest that, making coffee a fully sustainable agricultural product is an attractive strategy to overcome the current challenges of the coffee industry globally. Resumen: El café ofrece una posibilidad única en términos de sostenibilidad al integrar aspectos de desarrollo económico, inclusión social y protección del medio ambiente. El primer capítulo de esta disertación estima el impacto de la participación de pequeños productores en un modelo de negocios novedoso denominado Modelo de Relación Directa de Café (RCM por sus siglas en inglés). El segundo capítulo evalúa la economía y la ecología del café producido bajo sombra, un sistema de producción reconocido como ambientalmente sostenible. El tercer capítulo considera el papel crucial que juegan las cooperativas, y la confianza y la reciprocidad entre sus miembros. En general, el primer capítulo provee evidencia sobre un modelo de negocio sostenible que conecta pequeños productores con cadenas de alto valor y estimula prácticas agro-ecológicas. El segundo capítulo muestra que bajos las condiciones de mercado apropiadas, los pequeños productores pueden recibir los beneficios asociados a la conservación del bosque y los pájaros, facilitando una interacción sostenible entre los sistemas humanos y naturales. El tercer capítulo concluye que la propensión a confiar y actuar de manera reciproca entre miembros de una misma cooperativa es alta cuando la antigüedad de la membresía a la cooperativa es considerada. Adicionalmente, la inclusión de género y la educación juegan un papel fundamental para aumentar dicha confianza y reciprocidad. De manera conjunta, los tres ensayos sugieren que hacer del café un producto agrícola totalmente sostenible es una estrategia atractiva para sobrepasar los retos que enfrenta la caficultura a nivel global
