The objectives of this study were to review factors related to anaemia in pregnancy and to explore the community's views regarding its causes, identification, prevention and treatment. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out between July and September, 1991, in Amukoko, a peri-urban slum area in Lagos. The main outcome measure was hemoglobin concentration less than 11g/dl. Of 300 pregnant women attending the clinic, 68.3% were found to be anaemic (Hb<11g/dl) and 8% were severely anaemic (Hb<8g/dl).
