Aesthetics is to be understood by spanning the arc between its constitutive cultural-historical processes and its current perspectives. Along these lines and starting first of all by comparing Sibley and Quine with Dewey, this contribution attempts to show how the relationship between analytic philosophy and pragmatism in aesthetics can be considered more complex with respect to the simple oppositional scheme that is usually adopted. In particular, the complexity of this relationship becomes fruitful and topical when the question of meaning in its aesthetic root is investigated, exactly in the terms specified by Dewey in his masterpiece Art as Experience
