The war in Syria has been going on for more than six years and is still running with no sign to an end in the foreseeable future. Several reports including some commissioned by the United Nations have pointed to raging atrocities being continuously carried out by almost all parties involved in the crisis. This article examines the role of international law in resolving the Syrian conflict amidst the politics of power and national interests. It scrutinises the legal justifications for the involvement of foreign powers in the conflict in the first place and its classification as mostly non-international armed conflict.
