The Burgos traders’ corporation acted as a guild of merchants before the founding of the Consulate in 1494, which continued corporate activity, as well as becoming a commercial court with jurisdiction throughout Castile, in force until the nineteenth century. The study of the latter has overshadowed interest in that earlier cooperation, which defended and represented the merchants of Burgos during the fifteenth century, both in the city and in Bruges, where it formed a subsidiary corporation in the form of a Castilian consulate, which served as a laison that monitored factors settled there.
