Design and performance analysis of advanced GNSS-R instruments back-end

In 1993, the European Space Agency (ESA) suggested to use those signals as a tool to estimate sea height anomalies in an attempt to detect tsunamis before they reach the shore. Since then, GNSS-R has been a subject of topical interest, and has proven its feasibility for a diverse number of applications in land, ice and water bodies, from ground-based, airborne and space-borne instruments. This Ph.D. thesis has its roots in the ESA project PARIS-IoD, which aimed to study the feasibility of GNSS-R for sea altimetry from a space-borne instrument. Unfortunately, the project was canceled shortly after starting this thesis. However, some of the questions that have arisen during the initial phase of the project, have been the goals of this Ph.D. The thesis has two objectives. The first one is to solve some theoretical issues required for the development of next generation of GNSS-R instruments. The second one is to participate in the development of an airborne GNSS-R instrument mimicking the one intended for the PARIS-IoD, and to use it in field campaigns. The main feature of this instrument is that it has two dual-band (L1/L5) array antennas, with two beams per band that are analog steered towards the desired satellite and reflection point. As for the theoretical objectives; this thesis investigates five topics. Firstly, the thesis gives closed-form expressions of the so-called Woodward Ambiguity Functions (WAFs) of the modern GNSS signals as function of the receiver bandwidth. The motivation behind this work is that these equations can be later used in simulators in order to create reference models based on different physical magnitudes. Secondly, the thesis finds the optimum receiver bandwidth for each GNSS signal in terms of altimetric precision. The idea behind this study is that using a large bandwidth produces sharper waveforms, which translates into a higher resolution. However, the thermal noise increases as well with the bandwidth. Thus, there is an optimum bandwidth that minimizes the altimetric error. Thirdly, the thesis studies the impact of sampling the GNSS signals with 1-level on the GNSS-R observables in terms of precision and of sensitivity to changes in the physical magnitudes. This work has importance because if 1-level samples were to be used, then the hardware requirements in terms of FPGA resources, transmission rate, hard drive write speed, and storage capacity will be reduced. Fourthly, the thesis discusses different architectures for real-time correlators in FPGAs compare to those in GPUs. Results show that GPUs can be used for real-time, with the advantage of being much more flexible and easier to program. Finally, the thesis investigates the cross-talk phenomena, or interference between GNSS satellites in the iGNSS-R technique. Results show that this kind of interference is not a problem in space-borne missions, but it does have an impact on airborne and ground-based ones. In such cases, antenna arrays with large directivity should be used. Returning to the instrument design objective, this thesis has two main goals. Firstly, to build the signal processing units inside the receivers and in the transmitter used to generate the calibration signal, and to develop the software to control both. Secondly, to process the data from different airborne fields campaigns using the GPU software mentioned above. The results have shown the feasibility of MIR for soil moisture estimation, sea altimetry, sea state, topography and water body/land transitions.La reflectometria GNSS (GNSS-R) és un conjunt de tècniques que utilitzen els senyals GNSS reflectits sobre la superfície terrestre com a senyals d’oportunitat per a aplicacions de teledetecció. El 1993, l'Agència Espacial Europea (ESA) va suggerir utilitzar aquests senyals com a eina per estimar anomalies de l'alçada del mar en un intent de detectar tsunamis abans que aquests arribin a la costa. Des de llavors, GNSS-R ha estat un tema de gran d’interès i ha demostrat la seva viabilitat per a un nombre divers d’aplicacions terrestres, de gel i de mar, des d’instruments terrestres, aerotransportats i espacials. Aquesta tesis doctoral té les seves arrels en el projecte de la ESA PARIS-IoD, que tenia com a objectiu estudiar la viabilitat de GNSS-R per a l’altimetria des de l’espai. Malauradament, el projecte es va cancel·lar poc després d’iniciar aquesta tesi. No obstant això, algunes de les qüestions que van sorgir durant la fase inicial del projecte han estat els objectius d’aquest doctorat. La tesi té dos objectius. El primer és resoldre alguns problemes teòrics necessaris per al desenvolupament de la nova generació d'instruments GNSS-R. El segon consisteix a participar en el desenvolupament d’un instrument GNSS-R aerotransportat que imita el originalment planejat per PARIS-IoD i utilitzar-lo en campanyes de mesures. La característica principal d’aquest instrument és que compta amb dues antenes doble banda (L1 / L5), amb dos feixos per banda dirigits analògicament cap al satèl·lit i el punt de reflexió desitjat. En quant als objectius teòrics, aquesta tesi investiga cinc temes. En primer lloc, la tesi dóna expressions analítiques de les anomenades funcions d’ambigüitat (WAF) dels senyals GNSS moderns en funció de l’amplada de banda del receptor. La motivació d’aquest treball és que aquestes equacions es poden utilitzar posteriorment en simuladors per tal de crear models de referència basats en diferents magnituds físiques. En segon lloc, la tesi troba l’ample de banda òptim del receptor per a cada senyal GNSS en termes de precisió altimètrica. La idea darrere d’aquest estudi és que l’ús d’un ample de banda gran produeix waveforms més estretes, cosa que es tradueix en una resolució més alta. No obstant això, el soroll tèrmic també augmenta amb l’amplada de banda. Per tant, hi ha un ample de banda òptim que minimitza l’error altimètric. En tercer lloc, la tesi estudia l’impacte de mostrejar els senyals GNSS utilitzant un sol nivell en els observables GNSS-R en termes de precisió i sensibilitat als canvis en les magnituds físiques. Aquest treball té importància perquè si s’utilitzen mostres d’un nivell, es redueixen els requisits en termes de recursos FPGA, velocitat de transmissió, velocitat d’escriptura del disc dur i capacitat d’emmagatzematge. En quart lloc, la tesi discuteix diferents arquitectures per als correladors en temps real de les FPGAs i en GPUs. Els resultats mostren que les GPU es poden utilitzar en temps real, amb l’avantatge de ser molt més flexibles i fàcils de programar. Finalment, s'investiga el fenomen conegut com a crosstalk, es a dir, la interferència entre els satèl·lits GNSS quan s’utilitza la tècnica iGNSS-R. Els resultats mostren que aquest tipus d’interferència no és un problema en les missions espacials, però sí que té un impacte en les terrestres i aèries. En aquests casos, s’han d’utilitzar antenes amb gran directivitat. Tornant a l'objectiu de disseny d'instruments, aquesta tesi té dos objectius principals. En primer lloc, construir les unitats de processament del senyal dins dels receptors i del transmissor que s’utilitzen per generar el senyal de calibratge i desenvolupar el programari per controlar-les. En segon lloc, processar les dades de diferents campanyes de mesures mitjançant el programari GPU esmentat. Els resultats han demostrat la viabilitat de MIR per a l’estimació de la humitat del sòl, altimetria del mar, estat del mar, topografia i transicions de l'aigua / terra.Award-winningPostprint (published version
