The large genetic diversity present among faba bean has been explored for traits to improve crop performance. Characterising root traits of different faba bean cultivars and their response to neighbouring plants, can contribute to identifying cultivars most suitable for intercropping. This study examined root trait variation in intercropping conditions for multiple faba bean genotypes under water stress conditions. When intercropped with wheat, faba bean plants were negatively affected and had reduced root growth. Upon experiencing water stress, all plants reduced their root growth and enhanced their rhizosheath and lateral root hair length, but these changes did not differ strongly with respect to the presence of neighbouring plants.
