Dry mouth and dry eyes are multifactorial morbidities that can lead to a severely reduced quality of life. Approximately 20% of the population suffers from ocular or oral dryness. In the pursuit of pharmacological treatments of these troublesome symptoms, we sought to identify new targets and characterize underlying mechanisms that modulate lacrimal and salivary secretion. Xerogenic and xerophthalmic effects of antidepressants were examined in a rat in vivo model.
