Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death and disability in the elderly. However, the pathophysiological processes causing atherothrombosis are less understood in the elderly. Whether platelets behave in the same way as in younger people and whether conventional CVD risk factors are also predictive in older people are unclear. There is a paucity of evidence to guide CVD risk prediction and management in older individuals, which is further complicated by a higher comorbidity burden, increasing frailty, and functional decline.
