Introduction:The World Health Organisation (WHO) has estimated that globally anaemia affects1.62 billion people (24.8% of the population). Anaemia is a global problem especially so in the developing countries. In India, 82% of the children under 2 years and 70% of children under five are anaemic.As the prevalence rates vary among various age groups, so are the risk factors appear to vary according to the age group.Early recognition and treatment of anaemia is of crucial importance as the anaemia in children is associated with poor developmental outcome.Its aetiology in developing countries is multifactorial thus, the most important risk factors need to be identified for prevention strategy.
