Transurethral resection of bladder tumors (TURBT) is the first step in the initial management of bladder cancer. A TURBT is both diagnostic and therapeutic, and the procedure provides critical staging information. In a TURBT, the configuration (flat, sessile, or papillary), location (trigone, base, dome, or lateral walls), size (cm), and the number of tumors should be recorded. Tumors should be completely resected if they are small, solitary, and available for resection, and also other than superficial appearing low-grade tumors, muscularis propria must be included in the specimen to ensure adequate resection.
