Vegetación del hábitat de la paloma collareja (Patagioenas fasciata) en Escazú, Costa Rica

Introduction: The demography of the band tailed pigeon is not well known, because its habitat and habits make it difficult to locate them, observe them or catch an adequate sample of individuals. It is relevant to know the distribution, the types of habitat and the productivity of this species of pigeon, since any management measure must have information on these aspects. Objective: To characterize the vegetation of three observation sites of band tailed pigeons to generate information about their basic requirements and propose management measures. Methods: For the study of the composition and floristic structure the square-center point method was used, a total of 186 trees with a diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥10cm were measured. Results: In all three sites, about 50% of the individuals are grouped in the lower diameter classes and decreased in number in the larger diameter classes. The dense forest presented the highest number of species (N=17) followed by the agroforestry system (N=13) and with a smaller number the wooded paddock (N=4). The most abundant species were Myrsine coriacea in the wooded pasture, Rhamnus oreodendron in the agroforestry system and Freziera candicans in the dense forest. The composition of the vegetation of the three sites is not similar but species were found in common which coincides with other places of occurrence of the species in the country, these species could be determining the presence of band tailed pigeon. Conclusion: The implementation of agroforestry systems in coffee growing sites and the conservation of forest patches should be encouraged. I recommend the application of the methodology in other observation sites of band tailed pigeon in order to evaluate and compare the vegetation that is being used to establish important species and changes in vegetation cover.Introducción: La demografía de la paloma collareja no es bien conocida, porque su hábitat y hábitos hacen difícil su localización, observarlas o capturar una muestra adecuada de aves. Es relevante conocer la distribución, los tipos de hábitat y la productividad de esta especie de paloma, ya que cualquier medida de manejo debe contar con información de estos aspectos. Objetivo: Caracterizar la vegetación de tres sitios de observación de palomas collarejas (Patagioenas fasciata) para generar información de sus requerimientos básicos y proponer medidas de manejo. Métodos: El trabajo de campo lo realicé durante el 2013 en tres ecosistemas: potrero arbolado, finca agroforestal, y bosque denso. Para el estudio de la composición y estructura florística utilicé el método punto centro cuadrado, se midieron un total de 186 árboles con diámetro a la altura del pecho (DAP) ≥10 cm. Resultados: En los tres sitios cerca del 50% de los individuos se agrupan en las clases diamétricas inferiores y disminuyeron en número en las clases de diámetros mayores. El bosque denso presentó el mayor número de especies (N=17) seguido por el sistema agroforestal (N=13) y con un número menor el potrero arbolado (N=4). Las especies más abundantes fueron el ratoncillo (Myrsine coriacea) en el potrero arbolado, el duraznillo (Rhamnus oreodendron) en el sistema agroforestal y el coral (Freziera candicans) en el bosque denso. La composición de la vegetación de los tres sitios no es similar, pero se encontraron especies en común lo que coincide con otros lugares de presencia de la especie en el país. Estas especies podrían estar determinando la presencia de palomas collarejas. Conclusión: Se promueve la implementación de sistemas agroforestales en los sitios de cultivo de café y la conservación de los parches de bosque. Recomiendo la aplicación de la metodología en otros sitios de observación de palomas collarejas, con el fin de evaluar y comparar la vegetación que está utilizando para establecer especies importantes y cambios en la cobertura vegetal
