Lökotrienler (LT'ler) araşidonik asitten (AA) oluşan ve enflamasyona bağlı solunum hastalıkları ve kardiyovasküler hastalıklarda önemli proenflamatuar metabolitlerdir. Hem 5-lipoksijenaz (5-LO) hem de 5-lipoksijenaz aktive edici protein (FLAP) hücresel aktivasyonla oluşan yanıta bağlı olarak gerçekleşen LT biyosentezinin ilk adımı için gereklidirler. 5-LO'nun tedaviye sunulan sadece bir inhibitörü (zileuton) varken FLAP inhibitörü etkili henüz piyasaya çıkan bir ilaç etken maddesi yoktur.
