Kar potansiyelinin fazla olduğu yüksek bölgelerdeki havzaların yıllık akış hacimlerinin büyük bir kısmı, kış aylarında oluşan kar örtüsünün ilkbaharda erimesi sonucu oluşmaktadır. Kardan beslenen havzalarda; karın birikme ve erime dönemlerinin modellenmesi, su kaynaklarının verimli ve sürdürülebilir olarak işletilmesi bakımından önemlidir.
