Synthesis, electrochromic and optic properties of donor-acceptor type conductive polymers containing thiophene and thienothiophene

Konjuge π sistemlere sahip iletken polimerler kimyasal ve elektrokimyasal yükseltgenme ve indirgenmeye yatkındır ve bu yolla elektriksel ve optik özellikleri değişir. Sentetik metaller olarak da adlanan iletken polimerler geniş uygulama alanlarından dolayı son zamanlarda birçok alanda, özellikle elektrokimya alanında büyük ilgi görmektedir. İletken polimerlerin önemli uygulama alanlarından biri elektrokromik cihazlardır. Bu cihazlarda uygulanan gerilime bağlı olarak tersinir bir renk değişimi gözlemlenir. Bu tersinir renk değişimi elektrokromizm olarak adlandırılır. Bu tez çalışmasında donör ve akseptör fonksiyonel grupları aynı molekül içinde bulunduran iki farklı monomer sentezlenmiştir. Donör grup olarak tiyofen ve tiyeno[3,2-b]tiyofen, akseptör olarak ise konjügasyonu sağlayabilecek halkalı bir yapı kullanılmıştır. Bu monomerler elektrokimyasal olarak polimerleştirilmiş ve polimerlerin elektrokimyasal ve spektroelektrokimyasal özellikleri incelenmiştir. Akseptör grupta alkil zincirinin bulunması, polimerlerin çözünürlüğüne katkı sağlamıştır. Poli 2,2'-(2,5-bis(dodesiloksi)-1,4-fenilen)ditiyeno[3,2-b]tiyofen (P2) kullanılarak elektrokromik cihaz kurulumu gerçekleştirilmiş ve elektrokromik cihazın karakterizasyonu yapılmıştır.Conductive polymers, which have π conjugated systems are prone to chemical and electrochemical oxidation and reduction, and by this way change their electrical and optical properties. Conducting polymers which is known as synthetic metals due to specific applications attract great interest in many fields, especially in electrochemistry. One of the important applications of conductive polymers are electrochromic devices. In these devices, a reversible color change is observed upon applied voltage. This reversible color change is called electrochromism. In this study, two different monomers containing donor and acceptor functional groups within the same molecule structure were synthesized. Thiophene and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene moieties were used as the donor units. A heterocylic unit which provides conjugation was used as the electron acceptor unit. Synthesized monomers were polymerized electrochemically. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties of the polymers were investigated. Due to the presence of alkyl groups on acceptor unit, polymers had acquired solubility. By using poly 2,2'-(2,5-bis(dodecyloxy)-1,4-phenylene)dithieno[3,2-b]thiophene (P2), construction of the electrochromic device was achieved and characterization of the electrochromic device was performed
