This article seeks to identify and quantify variation in Norwegian local party support across different geographical entities. Drawing on the traditional political cleavage literature as well as the more recent literature on neighbourhood effects, arguments are presented as to why context should remain important for local party support despite growing centralisation, increasing individual mobility and less spatially bounded communication. The empirical analysis builds on two datasets from the 2007 local election and a multilevel modelling approach.
