This paper offers an in-depth analysis of the fortress of La Iruela (Jaén, Andalusia). Because of the greater importance of the nearby town of Cazorla, La Iruela has always gone almost unnoticed. However, the fortress is a good example of the type of fortification that the Almohads promoted in small towns, probably with the co-operation of the local peasant communities.
