Incidence of Hollow Viscus Injury in Blunt Injury Abdomen

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To study the incidence of hollow viscus injury in blunt injury abdomen, various modes of presentation , need for early diagnosis, common site of injury and evaluate various modalities of treatment and common complications. Blunt injury abdomen is caused mainly by road traffic accidents. They are usually not obvious. Hence u need strong suspicion to look for hollow viscus injury, late diagnosis may lead to fatal outcome. This dissertation choosen due to Rapid of increasing number of vehicles and consequently road traffic accidents. METHODOLOGY: Patients coming with blunt injury abdomen due to RTA or TTA or Fall from height or Fall of heavy object to Department of General surgery in STANLEY MEDICAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL between 2018 to 2019 are taken up for study. RESULTS: Males are mostly affected. It is commonly seen in the age group of 21-40 years. Road traffic accident forms the most common mode of injury. Commonly injured viscera in this present study is small bowel and they were treated by primary closure. Mesenteric injury is the second most common injury and were managed by simple repair. INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSION: Repeated clinical examination and apporapite imaging with multidisciplinary teamwork plays an important role in diagnosing the hollow viscous injury in blunt injury abdomen. CECT abdomen is the sensitive investigation to diagnose the injury. Early diagnosis and management reduces morbidity and mortality. Surgery remains the main stay of treatment
