Hyperuricemia is a Risk Factor for Accelerated Atherosclerosis in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus measured by Carotid Intimal Medial Thickness and Ankle Brachial Pressure Index

BACKGROUND: Elevated serum uric acid cause endothelial dysfunction, smooth muscle proliferation, platelet aggregation and reduce vasodilator activity which eventually leads to thrombus formation. So, in this study we are going to evaluate the role of uric acid in atherosclerosis of diabetes mellitus population. Other than conventional risk factors for atherosclerosis uric acid act as an add on factor for atherosclerosis. It accelerates the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis with other risk factors. OBJECTIVES: 1. To study about the role of hyperuricemia as an accelerating risk factor for atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus along with other risk factors. 2. To correlate between the level of serum uric acid and severity of atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 100 in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who admitted in general medical ward and triage ward of Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai. Patients tested for blood pressure, random blood sugar, serum uric acid, carotid intimal medial thickness and ankle brachial pressure index. History about age of the patients, duration of diabetes mellitus, presence of hypertension, presence of cerebrovascular accident, peripheral arterial disease and drug intake were obtained. RESULTS: Correlating the serum uric acid level with the carotid intimal medial thickness, people having normal serum uric acid level of 6.5mg% having mean CIMT value of 0.981mm. It has direct and significant correlation with p value of <0.001. Correlating the serum uric acid value and ankle brachial pressure index, people with normal serum uric value of 6.5 having mean ABI of 0.918.
