Library Lore | Spring 2021 / Issue 7 1 To date, Karen, Chelsey, and Cindy have altered over 2,000 authority records from the original Library of Congress records and their associated bibliographic records, over 600 of which they have created completely new authority records for. Over 12,000 bibliographic records have been updated with new and/or revised subject headings (containing over 40,000 headings). Not only does this represent a large volume of work but it is work that is nuanced and requires specialized knowledge of library records, Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), Indigenous Subject Headings, and library content management systems. The largest overall change has been correcting the LCSH Indians of North America to Indigenous Peoples throughout the catalogue. As not all records in the catalogue lend themselves to global update, the team continues to work through records. Some terms, such as “Métis” and “Michif” require that the subject matter of each catalogued item on the topic be evaluated to determine which term is applicable. Regional terminological differences between the US and Canada also require that individual records be investigated as to where they are referring to in North America. Further, ensuring that the authorized nation name in the catalogue is the known and approved name of the nation itself requires specialized and ongoing attention and monitoring. This monumental project faces challenges as the Library of Congress has not decolonized their classification system, and the records from OCLC are still being ingested by the library’s catalogue with older headings which require evaluation. As the team waits for the Library of Congress to decolonize their classification scheme, they are also looking at moving all works in the library’s collection created by, and some works created about, Indigenous peoples into the newly created Our Stories location on Level 10. The next steps in this project will include employing all these standards in the Library’s digitized collections which will involve evaluating the metadata associated with items in OPUS and the Digitized Collections. The University Library is proud of the work being done by this team to assist us in addressing the Canadian Federation of Library Associations’ Truth & Reconciliation Report and Recommendations (2017). In Spring 2019 a team of Technical Services staff, consisting of Karen McCallum, Chelsey Rathwell and Cindy Venhuis, began investigating the processes of decolonizing the cataloguing standards, subject heading assignments, and call number classifications. The investigation started by doing research regarding naming conventions of Indigenous peoples. After reviewing projects undertaken at several North American institutions, including the Xwi7Xwa Library at UBC, the ULeth Library team settled on the recommendations of the Manitoba Archival Information Network - Library of Congress Subject Headings (MAIN-LCSH) Working Group as being most applicable to our context. MAIN-LCSH strongly encourages other libraries to use their work on Indigenous Subject Headings to help with the decolonization projects. In the meantime, here are the faces you won’t be seeing around the library anymore (when we finally reopen!): Lynne Brown I began working at the University of Lethbridge on May 1st, 1974 in the cataloguing department. My initial plan was to work for a couple of years; well, 46 years later I retired from the Library. In 1976 I transferred to the Serials department, in 1980 I transferred to the Circulation department, and I finished my career in the CDS/GSD (Collection and Database Services/General Services Desk) departments. Over my years here I have met and worked with so many amazing people; I have loved my job at the University. Many lifelong friendships were formed. I can’t even begin to share favorite memories, there are so many of them. Everyone I worked with knew I liked things organized and straight so would often mess things up just to bug me. After a while I knew not to let it get to me; I would just follow them on shift and casually straighten things back up. I could have continued working for another 46 years; however, I do believe there does come a time to move on to the next chapter in your life, so I have done that. In retirement I plan on spending more time with family, my dogs, biking, golfing, having get-togethers with other retired staff, and eventually accepting that it’s okay to relax. Betsy Greenlees I started working at the University of Lethbridge in September 2001 in the Dean’s Ofice of the Faculty of Management. In April 2005 I moved on to the University Bookstore, working with faculty and the Copy Centre to produce student coursepacks. In September 2011 I landed in the new University Copyright Advisor ofice in the Library, as the copyright world became more complicated. Faculty, staf, and students consulted with the ofice on copyright matters for coursepacks, digital and print reserves, Moodle, presentations, theses…. For the last few years, I also assisted patrons at the General Services Desk. During some of my spare time, I provided freelance proofreading and copy editing for faculty, students, and several University publications. Now genealogy, photography, gardening, quiltmaking, and winemaker’s assistant (head bottler and quality assessor) are on my agenda. Our patio is always open for visits and/or assistance with the wine quality assessment – Dr. Deena’s health guidelines permitting! I have met and worked with so many wonderful people at the U of L over these 19 years, and many colleagues have become good friends. I wish you all the best in navigating these challenging times and hope some sort of normalcy returns soon! Digital Collection Highlights Disappointed you can’t browse our physical multi-media collection? Maybe looking for an interesting film or documentary to show in your class? Luckily for you, the Library subscribes to Criterion On-Demand. This digital library has over 2,600 feature films that are licensed for Canadian viewing. Different film producers include, but are not limited to: • Paramount Pictures and Paramount Vantage • DreamWorks SKG • Sony Pictures Classic • Miramax Films • Warner Brothers • Lionsgate Films • Twentieth Century Fox (limited to on-campus use only) The title selections include 1920s classics, over 1,100 French language versions of popular films, new releases, foreign films, documentaries, animated titles, and independent features. Carolyn Gaebel Hi All! Most of you are probably working from home these days and staying as safe and healthy as you can. And where am I, you ask? Well, this past August, I retired from the University of Lethbridge Library after almost 24 years. My background in libraries started in Lahr, West Germany, where my husband Terry and I were stationed with the military in 1988. I volunteered at the Canadian school library, which turned into a job where I learned how to do almost everything within a small library setting. When we moved back to Canada, I worked at a special government library for the Forestry Department in Fredericton, NB. I never knew there were so many kinds of classification systems for books. The one I remember the most was called the Universal Decimal Classification; another one was the Colon Classification. So, throw in a couple more and you have chaos in the stacks when trying to shelve books. Not sure if I ever got the hang of it. After Terry retired from the military we moved to Lethbridge in August 1996, and in November of the same year, I started working in the University Library. The library was located across from the cafeteria when I joined the Circulation Department. A great location, in the thick of things, so to speak. When I was not helping someone at the desk, I was adding reserves to our collection, entering data for maps, doing book repairs, and volunteering in our Interlibrary Loans Department. Before we moved the library into the new LINC building in 2001, the Circulation Department was disbanded, and I joined the Interlibrary Loan Department in behind the scenes. I worked there until I retired. At the same time, I was also part of the General Services Desk staff working at the front desk. Retirement? I am not sure what I thought I would be doing once I retired, but I joined the Great Canadian Plains Railway Society, who run the Galt Historic Railway Park just outside of Stirling, as their Treasurer, and I have been quite busy ever since! In our hopefully not too far away future, we plan to do some traveling, whenever we can, whenever it is safe to do so. I really enjoyed my time working in the University Library, and I miss all the staf and interacting with the patrons. Stay healthy and take care. Open Educational Resources During Open Access Week in October, the U of L was delighted to host Dr. Christina Hendricks from UBC. Dr. Hendricks is a professor of Philosophy, an expert in Open Educational Resources, and the Academic Director of the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology at UBC. Open Educational Resources (OER) are resources such as textbooks, videos, or images, that are free of cost to access digitally and that have an open license that allows reuse, revision, and redistribution. In addition to the cost savings for students, if educators replace commercial resources in their courses with OER, the benefits include being able to reuse and revise OER, adapting them to better fit a particular course or context, and easily keeping them up to date. Online events with Dr. Hendricks were very well-attended, and included educators from the U of L, Lethbridge College, across Alberta, and farther afield. Passion for Open Education was stoked by expert panelists, and educators learned new ideas and skills in a Pressbooks workshop. Pressbooks is one of the options for creating open textbooks, which is supported by Open Education Alberta and available for U of L educators to use. There are already thousands of high-quality, free, accessible Open Educational Resources that have been created and are available for use, re-use, and adaption in courses in many subject areas. Others were worried that they would not have time to contact their publishers to tell them about the new policy. This article explains how both of these concerns have been addressed. Most importantly, contributing your scholarly article to OPUS is easy and does not require you to contact your publisher. As soon as you receive notification that your scholarly article has been accepted for publication, all you need to do is forward the notice along with your accepted manuscript to opus.library@uleth.ca (this address is in the OA Policy itself and at the top of the OPUS homepage). Library staff will check your publisher’s policies to ensure that any required embargo period or prohibition against public archiving of the accepted manuscript is observed. In addition, earlier this year the Library compiled a list of 138 publishers that published one or more scholarly articles by U of L authors within the past four years. These publishers were identified primarily through the Web of Science database. Each publisher in the list received a letter from the University Librarian informing them of the University’s Open Access Policy and its applicability to all U of L academic staff, students, and post-docs. You can find a copy of the letter to publishers and the list of publishers who received the letter on this page. If publishers of your scholarly articles are not on the list and you would like them to receive a copy of the letter, please feel free to notify your subject librarian who will be happy to make the arrangements with the Library’s Research Services team and Library Administration.
