Molecular characterization of genetically modified (GM) crops has traditionally been accomplished through a combination of Southern blot, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and Sanger sequencing analyses. This characterization generates critical information that is used in downstream safety assessment of GM crops and development of GM detection methods.Next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, such as whole genome sequencing (WGS), have shown the potential to replace some or all of these techniques for molecular characterization of GM crops.
