This paper presents the basic requirements and procedures for the seismic design of reinforced concrete buildings according to the Chinese Code for Seismic Design of Buildings and Eurocode 8. It deals with two seismic codes that have been published recently, thus reflecting the state-of-the-art, and are in use in two parts of the world that are characterised by high seismic hazard, large population and major economic importance. The two codes pursue similar objectives, adopt the same underlying principles and follow similar procedures for the seismic design of reinforced concrete buildings, namely limit-state design, use of more refined analysis methods for irregular and important structures, detailing for ductility and capacity design of s...
