Modeling the atmospheric stable boundary layer(SBL) still represents a challenging task. The suppressed turbulence conditions typical of the night are yet to be understood and put in a rigorous mathematical framework. Modeling the SBL is however important given the effects of pollutants on human health. This paper provides a detailed overview on the state-of-the art in SBL modeling. A one-dimensional model (presently the most successful approach) is compared with the most advanced atmospheric-turbulence modeling technique, Large-Eddy simulation (LES).
