The paper describes the chemical processes leading to the high ozone and photo-oxidant formation under atmospheric conditions typical for the Mediterranean region. Emphasis will be given on the role of the oxygenated volatile hydrocarbons such as the carbonyls and on the aromatic compounds e.g. toluene and other substituted benzenes. Moreover, the contribution of biogenic compppppounds in relation to the anthropogenic ones with regard to their overall contribution to ozone and/or photochemical oxidant formation will be discussed.JRC.(EI)-Environment Institut
