Regulations for prevention of chemical accidents during normal day-to-day plant operations have been introduced in many countries. However, there is evidence that existing regulations may not be sufficient if the particular conditions associated with chemical accidents triggered by natural disasters, also known as Natechs, have not been factored in. This article provides an overview of Natech disasters, their characteristics, and the problems associated with Natech risk management, as well as recommendations on strategies for Natech disaster risk reduction and future challenges.JRC.G.7-Traceability and vulnerability assessmen
