The purpose of this investigation is to answer the question, What are the hermeneutical principles employed by Philipp Melanchthon in his interpretation of the Holy Scriptures as these principles are reflected in the Fourth Article of the Apology to the Augsburg Confession? Incidental to this primary question three secondary questions have suggested themselves: 1) How do Melanchthon\u27s hermeneutical principles relate themselves to his theology? 2) How do Melanchthon\u27s hermeneutical principles relate themselves to Patristic and Medieval hermeneutics? 3) How do Melanchthon\u27s hermeneutical principles relate themselves to modern hermeneutics, specifically, modern Lutheran hermeneutics
