This essay examines the importance of Athenaeus’ Deipnosophistae in transmitting Epicharmus’ comedies. Athenaeus cites the original comic texts using literal quotations, summaries or paraphrases, and allusions. Here I consider, in particular, the stylistic features of Athenaeus’ quotations and the reasons why he mentions Epicharmus
