The present paper explores the ways in which Ismail Kadare reacted to the conflicts between Serbians and Kosovar Albanians as tensions were escalating in the late 1990s. It aims to shed light on the processes through which one novella in particular, Three Elegies for Kosovo (1998), acts as a counter-narrative to the founding myth in Serbian nationalistic discourse, i.e. the Kosovo myth around the 1389 Battle of Kosovo Polje. It demystifies key elements of this myth and criticises the instrumentalisation of narratives. It further develops a reflection on European identity in relation to issues of inner conflicts and migration.
